Sadly, the 2011 Southern Maine Pride Parade & Festival is over... but there are plenty of other LGBTQ & gay-friendly events happening all over Maine. Check the Community Calendar of Events often.

This year's Pride, which marked its 25th anniversary, was a huge success and the largest turnout to date! The rain held off as some 40+ organizations marched in the parade, led by Portland Police Chief James Craig & Mayor Mavadones, and thousands gathered for food & fun with Master of Ceremonies Comedian Khris Frances in Deering Oaks Park. Check out news coverage of our event by The Portland Press Herald and WCSH6. Event photos can be found on SMP's Facebook fan page.

Remember that Pride happens the same week in June every year, so mark your calendars for 2012 and please consider volunteering to help with Pride. We are always seeking dedicated people to do small but very important tasks that help keep Pride running smoothly and keep the day fun, safe & clean for everyone. Contact info@southernmainepride.org if you are interested in being contacted to volunteer in 2012.

June is officially "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Pride Month." President Obama declared it so in 2009 in an official proclamation released by the White House. "The LGBT rights movement has achieved great progress, but there is more work to be done. LGBT youth should feel safe to learn without the fear of harassment, and LGBT families and seniors should be allowed to live their lives with dignity and respect." [full article]
